Peer Review Process

Takuana implements a double-blind peer review process (Anonymous Reviewer/Anonymous Author) to ensure the quality, integrity, and anonymity of all submitted manuscripts. All submitted manuscripts are subjected to several review processes consisting of (a) initial screening by the Editor in chief, (b) Section Editor Evaluation, (c) Peer Review Process by at least two anonymous reviewers with relevant expertise, and (d) Final Decision by the Editor in chief. Below is a detailed explanation of each stage in the review process.

For manuscripts submitted through the Fast-Track option, the same peer review stages apply, but with an accelerated timeline. Fast-track does not reduce the rigor or number of review steps, only the processing time is shortened within 2 weeks.

Initial Screening by Editor in chief (1-2 days)

After a manuscript is submitted, the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) conducts an initial screening. This step focuses on checking the manuscript’s relevance to the journal’s focus and scope, as well as performing a preliminary plagiarism check (max. 20%). If the manuscript is deemed unsuitable, it is rejected at this stage with a notification to the author. If it passes, the Editor-in-Chief assigns a Section Editor (SE) to oversee the manuscript through the remaining workflow.

Section Editor Evaluation (3-4 days)

The Section Editor is responsible for evaluating whether the manuscript meets the journal’s author guidelines. This includes assessing formatting, the presence of essential components, and basic academic structure. The SE also removes any identifying information (such as author name, email, and institution) from the manuscript file to ensure the double-blind review process. If the manuscript is ready for peer review, the Section Editor selects at least two suitable reviewers and sends review requests. If revisions are needed before review, the manuscript is returned to the author with comments. In cases where the manuscript is unfit for further processing, it may be declined.

Peer Review Process (20-30 days)

Selected reviewers receive the manuscript along with review guidelines and instructions. They evaluate the submission anonymously, focusing on its originality, clarity, methodology, academic contribution, and relevance to the field. After reviewing, each reviewer provides detailed comments and a recommendation. The Section Editor monitors this process and ensures timely completion.

Editorial Decision (5-7 days)

Based on the reviewers’ feedback, the Section Editor makes a preliminary editorial decision, which may be: accept submission, revisions required, resubmit for review, or decline submission. The decision, along with reviewers’ comments, is communicated to the author. If revisions are required, the author revises the manuscript accordingly and resubmits it. If the manuscript is recommended for resubmission for review, it may undergo up to three rounds of peer review. If after the third round the recommendation remains the same, the manuscript will be declined or suggested for submission to another venue.

Copyediting (5-7 days)

Once the manuscript is accepted, it proceeds to the Copy Editor (CE). The CE edits the manuscript for grammar, language clarity, and style, while also reviewing the metadata. Communication with the author takes place via the Copyediting Discussions panel. Upon author approval, the final copyedited version is uploaded and the process is marked complete by notifying the Section Editor.

Layout Editing (3-4 days)

The Layout Editor (LE) ensures the manuscript conforms to the journal’s publication format. This involves applying the journal template, converting the document into a PDF galley version, and confirming the layout with the author through the Production Discussions panel. Once approved, the final version is uploaded and the Section Editor is notified of its completion.

Proofreading and Final Check (up to 7 days)

At this stage, the Author, Editor-in-Chief, and Layout Editor conduct a final proofreading of the manuscript. This check focuses on spelling, punctuation, grammar, and any final formatting issues. If necessary, minor corrections are made and reported before the article proceeds to publication.

Scheduling and Publication (2-3 days)

The final stage is handled by the Editor-in-Chief. This includes verifying all metadata, assigning the article to an issue, and clicking the “Schedule for Publication” button in the system. Once completed, the manuscript is officially published and becomes accessible to the public through the journal platform.
